Congratulations! So your teen got their license. You no longer have to worry about getting your kid to hockey practice, friends’ houses, dance lessons or the mall, and you shouldn’t have to worry about your child being protected either. But before handing over the keys to your newly licensed teen, there are a few things you need to do first.

1) Make sure your teen is ready. Being in control of both themselves and a car is a huge responsibility. Your child should understand the importance of safe driving before driving on their own. As a parent, make sure you are driving safely and setting a good example.

2) Make sure your teen driver has auto insurance! You may want to add your teen onto your vehicle as a driver to save money, or if your teen has their own car you may want to consider shopping around for auto insurance for the whole family to get a lower rate. When purchasing a car for your teen, keep in mind that safe cars often mean a lower insurance premium. Also, encourage your teen to continue working hard in school because many insurance providers offer discounts for teens who get good grades.

3) Lastly, before your teen gets on the road you should consider signing him or her up for an AAA card . For a small yearly fee, you can get AAA service, which includes quick, on-scene help if your car breaks down, tire goes flat, or you run out of gas. They will also tow your car if need be and drive you to the nearest service station. Along with the auto services they provide, members also get a great discount on hundreds of stores, restaurants, travel, and entertainment. For more information visit AAA.com!
