According to the MetroWest Daily News, Boston Marathon organizers say a modified registration process resulted in no surprises during opening day on Tuesday. The Boston Athletic Association reports that registration still rests on age and gender based times, with the existing qualifying standards left intact until the 2013 race.
However, under new rules, only those runners besting their required time by at least 20 minutes could begin registering at Tuesday’s 10 am opening. Yet, if space remains, the athletic association will allow runners with times at least 10 minutes faster to join.
Registration closes on Saturday at 10 pm, but will reopen from September 19th at 10 am to September 23rd at 5 pm if enough spaces are left. In addition, if spaces remain, anyone with a qualifying time can register after the September 23rd deadline on a first-come, first-served basis.
Athletic association Executive Director Thomas Grilk commented on the event’s roots and the rule changes by saying, "The core of it has been athletic excellence." While the response from the running community has been largely positive, Grilk said, he acknowledged that some would-be participants will be disappointed and that figuring out the best registration system is an "inexact science," with future tweaks possible.
