The Joys of New England Driving

We all know that New England weather is not for the faint of heart, but the weather this winter has taken a toll on even the most experienced New Englanders. One thing the weather has affected more than our cheery attitudes are the roads. Driving around town, I'm sure you've had to dodge your fair share of potholes both large and small. You may have even damaged a tire or two, so it is important that you have the right Massachusetts auto insurance to keep your car protected in the event that you do experience pothole damage. In some instances, the town in which the pothole was located will pay for the damage done to your car, but not in all cases. Potholes form when water from snow and rain seeps into the pavement and causes it to soften and break up. When a car drives over it, the softened pavement cannot support the car and it sinks in the pothole. On Boston.com, there is a map of the major potholes in the Greater Boston area. If you know of any potholes not on the map, you can even go in and fill them in yourself. This tool is designed to show drivers where potholes are located and to make the city of Boston aware of the potholes that are potentially dangerous to our vehicles. Unfortunately, as drivers, there is not much we can do besides avoid those potholes until Spring when they are (hopefully) filled in!  As always, though, Merrimack Valley Insurance Agency encourages you to practice safe driving, especially around potholes. Do not drive erratically or swerve into another lane to avoid potholes. If you can, slow down before reaching the pothole and if possible, try to drive over it so that your tires do not fall into the hole. Your car will thank you!
